Tomašica (near Prijedor) is a mass grave that had been hidden for 20 years before it was discovered in early September this year. Until recently Bosnian Serb witnesses kept silent about the grave’s location. Just over 360 bodies have been dug up so far but officials assume this may be the biggest mass grave in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that over 1000 remains of Bosnian Muslims (mainly) might be found. The Sarajevo-based Missing Persons’ Institute said the Tomasica grave is linked to a secondary one found in 2003 about six miles away, where the bodies of 373 victims had been hidden. Before the Tomasica grave was pinpointed, the biggest mass grave found in Bosnia was at Crni Vrh in Srebrenica, where 629 bodies were dug up. The Srebrenica massacre was the most notorious atrocity committed by Bosnian Serb forces. The Tomasica grave covers more than 5,000 sq m and is 10m deep. The war in Bosnia saw Europe’s worst mass killing since the Holocaust during World War Two.
